OVERVIEW

Georgi Manev was one of the best Bulgarian physicists who worked during
the first half of the 20 century. He published his work in the best journals of his time:
Astronomische Nachrichten, Comptes rendus de l'Academie des

Scienties de Paris, Zeitschrift fuer Physik, etc. His ideas on the
problems of cosmology and mathematical physics offered a classical
alternative to special relativity on which he corresponded with Albert Einstein.
After the Second World War his work was forgotten, but in 1993 his ideas
found new applications. Florin Diacu, a mathematician at the University
of Victoria, in Canada, revived the interest in this subject, which has
been intensly studied since.

At least at the level of the solar system, Manev's field provides the
same good theoretical approximations as general relativity but without
leaving the framework of classical mechanics. During the last decade
researchers from Canada, Romania, USA, Mexico, Spain, Portugal,
Switzerland, Brazil and other countries studied this subject, aiming to
describe the dynamics of particle systems in a Manev field, or in
Manev-type fields, given by a A/r+B/r2 potential, with A and B
real constants.

This conference, organized by the Bulgarian Academy with the help of
Euroscience, aims to shed more light on Manev's personality, scientific
activity and ideas, and to celebrate 120 years since his birth. We would
like to bring together astronomers, mathematicians and physicists and to
identify joint fields of research related to Manev's model.
